A CSV file is plain text, so opening it in a text editor shows a wall of commas. A viewer shows the same data as a table, which is far easier to read, search and check before you use it.
When a viewer is useful
- Checking an export before importing it somewhere else.
- Looking at a file on a phone, where Excel may not be installed.
- Finding one customer or order inside thousands of rows.
- Seeing if the columns lined up correctly.
How to use it
- Open CSV Viewer and choose your file.
- Type in the search box to filter rows in all columns.
- Click a column name to sort. Click again to reverse.
- Use Previous and Next to move through pages of 100 rows.
Sorting numbers and text
If every value in a column is a number, the column is sorted by value, so 9 comes before 10. Otherwise it is sorted alphabetically.
Spotting problems
- A single very wide column means the wrong separator was used.
- Strange symbols mean the file is not UTF-8.
- Rows with fewer values than the header usually have a stray quote or line break.
