How to Fix a Dark Photo: Brightness, Contrast and Colour

4 min read · Updated October 2026

Many everyday photos only need a small push: a bit brighter, a bit more contrast or slightly stronger colour. You do not need a big editing app for that.

What each slider does

  • Brightness makes the whole picture lighter or darker.
  • Contrast makes the difference between light and dark areas stronger or softer.
  • Colour strength makes colours more vivid or more muted.
  • Black and white removes colour completely, and sepia gives a warm old photo look.

How to edit

  • Open Photo Editor and add your picture.
  • Move the sliders and watch the preview change.
  • Try black and white or sepia if you like the look.
  • Download the edited picture. The saved file uses your exact settings.

A simple order that works

Start with brightness until the picture looks about right. Then add a little contrast to make it feel less flat. Finally, adjust colour strength. Small changes usually look more natural than big ones.

Know the limits

These edits help with mild problems. A very dark or blurry photo cannot be fully rescued, because the detail is not in the picture. Your original file is never changed, so you can try as many times as you like.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing every slider to the maximum.
  • Brightening a photo so much that bright areas turn pure white.
  • Boosting colour so far that skin looks orange.
  • Editing the only copy of the picture.

What brightness and contrast do

Brightness makes the whole picture lighter or darker. Contrast changes the difference between the dark and light parts: more contrast makes the picture punchier, less contrast makes it softer and flatter. A small change in both can rescue a dull photo taken on a cloudy day or indoors.

A gentle workflow

Change one setting at a time and make small moves. First fix brightness until the main subject is clearly visible. Then increase contrast a little until the picture has depth. If dark areas turn completely black or bright areas turn pure white, you have gone too far and detail is lost.

  • Compare with the original often.
  • Avoid extreme values.
  • Look at the picture on a phone and on a laptop if you can.

When editing is not enough

Editing can improve a picture, but it cannot recover detail that was never captured. A very dark or very blurry photo is better retaken. For future photos, tap the screen to focus on the subject, use daylight where possible and keep the lens clean. Save your edited photo as a new file and keep the original.

Fixing common photo problems

A photo taken against a window is dark because the camera exposed for the bright background. Raising brightness helps, but too much makes the window look washed out. Photos taken indoors can look yellow and flat, and a small contrast boost often brings them back to life.

Pictures taken in fog or haze have little contrast. Increase contrast slowly until shapes become clear again. Product photos for online shops look best when brightness is even and the background is clean.

As a final step, look at the whole picture, not only the main subject, and ask whether it looks natural. If you can tell it has been edited, ease off a little.
