How to Crop PDF Pages and Trim White Margins

3 min read · Updated October 2026

Scanned pages often come with wide white borders, or with a dark edge from the scanner. Cropping makes the content fill the page and look more professional.

Why crop a PDF

  • Remove scanner shadows and dark edges.
  • Make small text bigger when reading on a phone.
  • Get rid of blank margins before printing.
  • Cut off a header or footer you do not want.

How to crop

  • Open Crop PDF and add your file.
  • Enter how many millimetres to trim from the top, bottom, left and right.
  • Press the button and download the cropped PDF.
  • Open it and check several pages.

Finding the right numbers

Start with small values such as 5 or 10 millimetres and look at the result. Adjust and run it again on your original file until the margins look right. The same trim is applied to every page, so check pages with content near the edge.

Cropping is not hiding

Cropping changes what is visible, but it is a layout change. It is not a safe way to hide private information. For that, use Redact PDF, which removes the hidden content.

Common mistakes

  • Trimming too much and cutting off page numbers or text.
  • Forgetting that the same trim applies to every page.
  • Using cropping to hide private details. Use redaction instead.
  • Not checking pages that have content close to the edge.

When cropping a PDF is useful

Cropping removes unwanted space around the content of a page. It helps when scanned pages have wide black borders, when a document has large margins that make the text look tiny on a phone, or when you want to keep only a table or figure from a page.

A tighter page also reads better on small screens, because the content fills more of the display without zooming.

Cropping carefully

Crop in small steps and preview the result. Leave a little breathing space around text so letters at the edge are not cut off. If your pages have page numbers or headers at the edge, decide whether you want to keep them before you crop. When pages in a scanned book have different margins on left and right pages, test a few of each.

Cropping versus deleting content

In many PDF files a crop only hides the outside area. The hidden content may still exist inside the file. Do not rely on cropping to remove confidential information. If you need to hide sensitive details, use a proper redaction tool instead and then check the final file.

Cropping scanned pages for easier reading

Scans often include a dark edge or a strip of the scanner bed. Trimming these makes the document look cleaner and reduces the area that has to be printed. It also helps e-readers and phones show the text larger, because the visible area now holds only content.

When cropping many pages at once, choose margins that suit the widest content, so no page loses text. If some pages have very different margins, process them in separate groups. After cropping, flip through the file at normal zoom and look at all four edges of a few pages, including the first and last page, which are usually the least regular.
