How to Convert JSON to CSV for Excel

4 min read · Updated October 2026

APIs and apps give you JSON, but most people want to look at the data in a spreadsheet. Converting JSON to CSV lets you sort, filter and share it with colleagues who do not read code.

What shape of JSON works best

The ideal input is an array of objects that share the same keys, for example a list of customers. Each object becomes one row and each key becomes a column. A single object is treated as a table with one row.

How to convert

  • Open JSON to CSV and paste your JSON, or load a .json file.
  • If there is an error, fix the line shown first.
  • Choose the separator and whether to add a BOM.
  • Copy the result or download it as a .csv file.

Nested objects

When an object contains another object, such as address with city and country, the columns are named address.city and address.country. Lists inside a record are written as text in one cell, so no data is lost.

Opening the file in Excel

  • Turn on BOM if names or symbols look wrong.
  • Use semicolon if your region expects it.
  • Use the Data tab and import from text if Excel puts everything in one column.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I see an Invalid JSON message?

The text is not valid JSON. Common causes are a missing quote, a trailing comma or single quotes instead of double quotes.

Can it handle thousands of records?

Yes. Large data may take a moment, and the preview is shortened but the download is complete.

Is my data uploaded?

No. It stays in your browser.
