How to Convert an Excel Sheet to CSV

4 min read · Updated October 2026

Many systems, from email tools to accounting software, only import CSV files. Exporting a sheet from Excel is easy, but the details matter: which sheet, which separator and how dates and accents are saved.

When you need a CSV

  • Importing contacts or products into another system.
  • Sharing data with someone who does not use Excel.
  • Feeding data to a script or a database.
  • Making a small, simple copy of one sheet.

How to convert

  • Open Excel to CSV and choose an .xlsx file.
  • If the workbook has several sheets, pick the one you need.
  • Choose comma, semicolon or tab as the separator.
  • Check the preview, then download the CSV.

Choosing the separator

Comma is the standard. In some regions, where the comma is used as a decimal mark, programs expect a semicolon instead. If your CSV opens as one long column, try the other separator.

Important to know

  • The CSV contains calculated values, not formulas.
  • Only one sheet is saved per CSV. Convert each sheet separately.
  • Dates are written as year-month-day, which most systems understand.
  • Old .xls files are not supported. Open them in Excel and save as .xlsx first.

Frequently asked questions

Why add a BOM?

A BOM is a small marker that helps Excel recognise UTF-8, so accents and non-English letters show correctly when you reopen the CSV in Excel.

Are charts and images saved?

No. CSV holds only the cell values.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It is read in your browser.
