How to Convert a CSV File to Excel (.xlsx)

4 min read · Updated October 2026

CSV files open in Excel, but they often look wrong: phone numbers lose their leading zeros, long numbers turn into scientific notation and accents turn into strange symbols. Converting to a real .xlsx workbook fixes most of these problems.

Why not just double click the CSV?

When Excel opens a CSV, it guesses the type of every column. A phone number like 09876 becomes 9876, and a 16 digit ID can turn into 1.23E+15. Once the file is saved that way, the original value is gone.

How to convert

  • Open CSV to Excel and choose your file.
  • Check the number of rows and columns shown.
  • Press Convert and download the .xlsx file.
  • Open it in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice.

How the tool treats your data

  • Plain numbers are saved as numbers so you can add and sort them.
  • Values with leading zeros, such as 007 or 09876, stay as text.
  • Text that starts with = is saved as text and is never run as a formula.
  • The first row is kept as it is, so your headers stay on top.

Fixing broken letters

If names in Hindi, French or other languages look wrong, the CSV was probably saved in an older encoding. Save it again as UTF-8 from the program that created it. The converter reads UTF-8 and falls back to a common Windows encoding if needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does it support semicolon or tab separated files?

Yes. The separator is detected automatically.

Is there a size limit?

Files up to 50 MB are accepted. Very large files may be slow on an older phone.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The conversion happens in your browser.
