Small business owners, shoppers and freelancers regularly need to add GST to a price or find out how much GST is hidden inside a bill. Two simple formulas cover both.
Adding GST to a price
GST amount = price x rate / 100. Total = price + GST. For a 1,000 rupee item at 18%, GST is 180 and the total is 1,180.
Removing GST from a price that includes it
Price without GST = total / (1 + rate / 100). For a bill of 1,180 at 18%, the price without GST is 1,180 / 1.18 = 1,000, and the GST inside is 180. Many people wrongly take 18% of 1,180, which gives 212.4 and is not correct.

CGST, SGST and IGST
For a sale within one state, GST is split equally between the central and the state government. At 18%, that is 9% CGST and 9% SGST. For a sale between states, the full 18% is charged as IGST.
Check your rate
The rate depends on the product or service and can change. Check the current rate on the official GST portal or ask your accountant before you issue invoices.
